Plaques in the Treasure Island Trail
Our Proposal for Siting the Plaques
The Plaques will be of long-lasting aluminium castings:-

The main casting will be in the shape of a battered and scorched manuscript scroll. On it will be painted a map of the Bristol harbour area, centred on Queens Square, with 'Black Spots' to mark the location of each plaque. Inlaid into the casting will be another, in the shape of an open book, with the appropriate character screen-printed on it. These depictions will be direct facsimiles of the famous Mervyn Peake illustrations from the 1948 edition of Treasure Island.

At the top of the plaque will be a casting of the emblem of one of the Trust's main supporters, Rotary.

Blind Pew - Blind Pew acosts Jim Hawkins outside the 'Admiral Benbow' inn, owned by Jim's mother.
The Llandoger Trow is typical of the waterside inns of the period

Captain's Papers - Squire Trelawny, Doctor Livesey and Captain Smollett meet at a dock-side inn to discuss their forthcoming voyage.
Welsh Back at the time was teeming with inns and coffee houses?
Our Plaque could be mounted on the side of a modern Coffee House on Welsh Back

Long John Silver - Long John Silver was the landlord of the 'Spyglass' inn on the Bristol Harbour side.
Many inns in ports were fitted with spy-holes looking out on the streets to give warning of approaching 'Press Gang' parties. The Hole in the Wall' inn still has spyglasses in the walls of a small room looking along the dock side.

Jim Hawkins - Jim hid in an apple barrel on board the 'Hispaniola'.
The Plaque could be mounted on a parapet of Redcliffe Bridge, next to the dock where the Hispaniola may have berthed.

Ben Gunn - Ben Gunn met Jim on Treasure Island and showed him his secret hiding places and cave. Redcliffe Caves would be an ideal location for the Plaque, as well as for a sculpture of Ben Gunn.

Israel Hands - Israel Hands, whilst under the influence of rum, chased Jim into the rigging of the 'Hispaniola' and tried to kill him. When Hands lunged at him, Jim lost his hold on the rigging and his pistols went off, killing Hands, who fell into the sea.
Bathurst Basin with its ancient slipways would be an ideal location to erect a mast with a sculpture of the falling Hands, and the adjacent 'Ostrich' an ideal place for a Plaque.

A Survivor - After the adventures of the treasure seekers most of the pirates were killed, and few survived. Provisions were in short supply for the return journey and so the survivors collected every scrap of food from the island before setting sail.
